Tidwoad, the gnome proprietor of Tidwoad’s Emporium, offered the party a treasure map in exchange for a share of the loot, specifically the crown of gnome king. The map led to an old gnome settlement called Grommeltorp. Located in the Pomarj, a ruined kingdom infested with evil humanoids, Grommeltorp was abandoned 60 years ago when it was besieged by orcs and goblins.

After a journey of 4 days, the characters enter the ruined gnome settlement and find it occupied by evil dwarves known as Duergar. With the help of a strange Duergar named Volgal Ordriksson, the characters are able to outflank the Duergar and face the Duergar leader, Thane Goruk, a creature of metal, flame and flesh. The party is able to defeat the Duergar King, but the king’s explosive death kills Haldain. The surviving party, shocked by Haldain’s death and exhausted from their ordeal, leaves Grommeltorp without the gnome treasure that was said to be hidden somewhere in its tunnels.
